Free Open Source Software (FOSS)

Definition

Free Open Source Software (FOSS) is software for which the source code is freely available, open for modification and freely distributable. Open source is not necessarily free in the sense of ‘without payment’. On the other hand there exists Freeware that costs nothing, but does not unveil its source code. This distinction often confused, though in general and certainly on this site with the phrase open source software is meant: Free Open Source Software, or FOSS, without costs to acquire and with source code open for modification. Licenses concerning software are diverse.
