Stratified random sampling

Stratified random sampling

Definition

Full text

With stratified random sampling you take a sample that consists of items selected by chance from predefined groups in the population. This is done to make sure that you include all already known groups within the population in your sample. For example you would predefine age categories in the example given for simple random sampling and make sure that your sample includes infants, children, adolescents and adults. To counter for differences in sizes of such groups you can weigh your sample by adjusting the amounts of items selected from the predefined groups (so you would select fewer adolescents than adults for example).
